Kick・shaw

Samantha Leigh Kearney

Kick・shaw: // elegant but insubstantial // worthless delicacy

In this exhibition, Samantha uses paper to recreate the familiar. This body of work is constructed almost completely out of paper, all hand cut and manipulated to meet her desires. This work is a display of her attention to detail as well as her meticulous efforts. The work presented is only a part of her; she challenges the usability and strength of materials. Using paper, Samantha creates a conversation between the unexpected strength of the materials and the fragility of beliefs, dreams and home. The work is an extension of her body and a heartfelt display of what she is capable of.

Tiny Paper Houses

2020

These houses are handmade with watercolor paper and mounting tape. All of the sheets are cut by hand with an exacto knife and aligned to create the small models. These pieces are paper models of the places that I have considered home. The use of paper for this project juxtaposes the relationship of stability from a household and the fragile nature of home. The homes become objects of intrigue and great delicacy - but remain unsubstantial in the big picture.

Sizes range, individual houses are no larger 6x3x2inches.

Rosary

2019

“how free can we be without chaos”

This set of rosary beads made with paper from a book about government. There is noticeable precision in the details and the way the paper is manipulated. The piece being made of paper addresses the fragility of religion and people's beliefs - as well as hope. Rosary beads are often ornate and elegant, but their relation to religious practices is relatively minor. Looking at all of life itself, what does it all really mean?

The rose beads are less than .5 inch cubes.

The book is 1x1.25x.375 inches, and the string is 30 inches long.

Terrarium

2020

This terrarium is made from book pages. Different forms were constructed with the pages in order to make mounds, rods and other shapes that were brought together to make an environment, enclosed in a glass sphere. This piece addresses the mystical environments that children dream of. Their being made of paper addresses that these are temporary materials and they are not meant to last forever. The fragility of the material reflects the delicacy and the fragility of these dreams. The sphere is 12 inches around.
