emerge, embrace exhibits Lily Gilston’s continued practice of combining elements from the earth with synthetic materials to create an unexpected sculptural installation. The piece comprises intricate weavings, unraveling fabric, and bulbous growths emerging from sprawling tree branches. The result is an unsettling yet familiar physical space for psychological contemplation.
all that you seek, 2020. Audio.
Layers of voices build this enveloping soundscape, originally played outside the Gallery space at the Opening Reception of Gilston’s exhibition. Abrupt spoken word and echoing whispers evoke a feeling of being surrounded by hordes of people as the viewer contemplates the installation before them. At the end, an important reminder reverberates:
“All that you are seeking is also seeking you. If you lie still, sit still, it will find you. It has been waiting for you a long time.”
– Clarissa Pinkola Estes
