Portrait of the Artist (2022)
Textile
Chiffon fabric, string, dye, textile paint
Approximately 5’ x 23’
Sarah Quiles’ large-scale textile work Portrait of an Artist utilizes dye, textile paint and string to map a landscape of memory, identity, healing and change. The work functions as one continuous self-portrait and as a series of twenty-seven individual self-portraits. Spanning from left to right the textiles create a timeline, representing three stages of her development: childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Each of these stages re-examine nine specific themes in Quiles’ life, recording each portrait’s transformation throughout the course of her experiences.
Themes one through nine are sequenced respectively: Innocence of life, innocence of character, identity as an artist, relationship to self, relationship to mom, relationship to dad, relationship to brother, relationship to God, and love.
